Treatment for Anxiety in Raleigh NC
Anxiety Is A Common Mental Health Condition.
Anxiety is the most common mental health condition and symptoms include panic attacks, repetitive thoughts, and rumination. Roughly 20.00% of the adult population experiences moderate to severe anxiety. Women are more likely than men to endorse anxious symptoms. The most common symptoms of anxiety include:
Excessive worry
Obsessive thoughts
Irritability and restlessness
Poor concentration
Panic attacks
PANIC ATTACKS
Panic attacks are a sudden escalation of anxious symptoms. The patient’s anxiety triggers a physical reaction that can include sweating, hyperventilation, and increased heart rate. Panic attacks are treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a common and effective form of talk therapy.
COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of talk-therapy that is used to treat anxiety and depression. In CBT, the therapist and the patient work together to separate the patient’s behaviors, emotions, and thought patterns. This treatment yields the best results when used on a weekly basis, however, each individual is unique. Some patients may need additional sessions if they are in crisis.
TREATMENT WITH MEDICATION
The Journal of American Medicine Medication (JAMA) published a study in May of 2020 that suggested that regular talk therapy AND medication can lead to an 80.00% reduction in anxious symptoms. Many of my patients use medications and believe that they are helpful. However, not all individuals feel comfortable with this approach. While I do not prescribe medication, I assist my clients with the decision-making process. As your therapist, I will support you in whatever decision you make.
TREATING PTSD WITH EMDR
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a type of anxiety that sometimes needs an alternative form of treatment, Eye Movement Desensitization, and Reprocessing (EMDR). I am certified in EMDR and able to use this treatment when it is appropriate.
